Maggie’s Center
BOTHY
A bothy is a simple shelter left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge and used as a place for people to gather. Bothies are often found in more remote, mountainous areas and seen as a place of refuge from the elements.
Solution Statement
Maggie’s Center is nestled in the high country overlooking the Blue Ridge Parkway. Reimagining this idea was done with an intentional focus on implementing the comforts of home into a community center. The design focuses on a radial layout that invites exploration and connection within the space. Navigating through Maggie’s Center is made easy through identifiable landmarks, such as large murals and a stone fireplace. Set along a curving path are spaces, both communal and private, that allow guests the opportunity to find an area that meets their needs.
The hub of the home is often the kitchen, and Maggie’s is no different. A welcoming communal dining table grounds the space under a stunning glass installation that projects radial shadows onto the adjacent wall. The table features counter and table height seating options, allowing accessibility for everyone. A 24/7 pantry is available for everyone and there are plenty of seats to go around. While the primary building does feature multiple sitting rooms, a game room, and staff spaces the back building holds most of the programming. From yoga, an enclosed sitting room fit for ample socializing, an art room, sanctuary space, and scream/cry rooms, these zones are there to meet individual needs. To access the back building, there are two primary exits that guide guests along a curved, covered path.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Geometric Limitations:

Lines and visual paths diverging from a common center.
Spaces set on a spiral path of travel; adds a sense of interest and mystery in the space
Radial circulation guides the user through public/private areas accordingly
